About Us

We're a small team doing big things

Established in 2010, the Heart of Borneo Project aims to protect the ecological and cultural richness of the rainforests of Borneo

Our approach is the use the Heart of Borneo Rainforest as a focal point and springboard for our activities. This vast, uninterrupted stretch of primary rainforest, shared between Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei, is one of the most biodiverse places on earth and is largely unexplored.

We contribute to conservation efforts through scientific research in data deficient areas, awareness raising, education, and capacity building in remote communities. We are finding innovative ways of combining these elements, for instance by creating interactive expeditions through the use of portable satellite communications technology, producing high quality multimedia on site and in real time, and taking part in live video and chat links with audiences around the world.

We believe that a multidisciplinary approach, combining research into remote and previously unexplored areas with education and the use of the media is the best approach to ensure maximum impact.

We also believe that people and the environment are inextricably linked, whether they are remote communities living in the rainforests of Borneo, or bankers working in the 'city'. We must accept our dependance on the environment, and embrace our role as stewards of the anthropocene.
