The Heart of Borneo

“There is only place remaining in Southeast Asia where tropical rainforest can still be conserved on a grand scale… the dense forest that straddles the borders of Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia on the island of Borneo” – WWF

This whole region is now known as the Heart of Borneo, after an historic trans-boundary agreement to ‘sustainably manage’ the forest here, negotiated by the WWF between Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei.

Borneo in SE Asia is the third largest island in the world, and is split between Indonesia in the south, and Malaysia and Brunei in the North.

The Heart of Borneo region consists of 220,000km2 of rainforest – almost 1/3 of the entire island and roughly the size of the United Kingdom. It is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet with 52 new species discovered over the past 5 years alone and the area is still largely unexplored.
